Peak Oil

It was barely a year ago that we experienced a serious oil shock when gas was upwards of $1.40/litre. It is anybody’s guess when the next shock will come. But it is safe to say that price hikes and oil shortages are going to intensify in years to come. While you might not take immediate concern, do consider a few facts. Oil is a non-renewable resource. There is a limited amount in the ground and new reservoirs are few are far between. The science suggests global oil production has or is about to peak. Supplies will decline, yet global demand for energy is at an all-time high. How does one live in a world of depleted oil supplies when we as Canadians use nine times more gasoline than the global average?

“The Transition Movement is an attempt to design abundant pathways down from the oil peak, to generate new stories about what might be waiting for us at the end of our energy descent and to put resilience-building back at the heart of any plans we make for the future” (The Transition Handbook)
