Join us on September 21st for our monthly meet up. It will be held at our usual spot on the second floor of City Hall in the Huronia Room. There will be signs to direct you. This month we will be screening the award winning film “the Economics of Happiness” by Helena Norberg-Hodge, Steven Gorelick & John Page. The film will be followed by a discussion about the concept of localization. A $5.00 donation would be appreciated. Proceeds to support the film producers.

‘Going local’ is a powerful strategy to repair our fractured world—our ecosystems, our societies and our selves

Economic globalization has led to a massive expansion in the scale and power of big business and banking. It has also worsened nearly every problem we face: fundamentalism and ethnic conflict; climate chaos and species extinction; financial instability and unemployment. There are personal costs too. For the majority of people on the planet life is becoming increasingly stressful. We have less time for friends and family and we face mounting pressures at work. The Economics of Happiness describes a world moving simultaneously in two opposing directions. On the one hand, government and big business continue to promote globalization and the consolidation of corporate power. At the same time, all around the world people are resisting those policies, demanding a re-regulation of trade and finance—and, far from the old institutions of power, they’re starting to forge a very different future. Communities are coming together to re-build more human scale, ecological economies based on a new paradigm – an economics of localization. We hear from a chorus of voices from six continents including Samdhong Rinpoche, the Prime Minister of Tibet’s government in exile, Vandana Shiva, Bill McKibben, David Korten and Zac Goldsmith. They tell us that climate change and peak oil give us little choice: we need to localize, to bring the economy home. The good news is that as we move in this direction we will begin not only to heal the earth but also to restore our own sense of well-being. The Economics of Happiness restores our faith in humanity and challenges us to believe that it is possible to build a better world

This month’s topic was “Local Food”

Our presentation concentrated on where to buy local food and the advantages in “Eating Local Food”. A panel of speakers joined us to enlighten the audience about why buying local is so important. There was a representative from “The Good Food Box” which is run out of the Barrie Community Health Centre on Sophia and Maple. You can purchase a large or small basket of food monthly, all year round, for a very reasonable price. Simcoe County Farm Fresh talked about where local farms are located and what their organization does to promote our local farmers. Kim Keckes from Moondance Organic Farms in Essa Twsp. discussed how to grow our own food. She touched on urban gardening in our yard, down the side of our house or even in our front yard. She also spoke about growing food in small areas such as square foot gardening or container gardening. Kim has a market stand where you can purchase fresh food and she also teaches classes on gardening. Maureen Giffen from Edencrest Farms in Minesing talked about CSA’s Community Shared Agriculture. Maureen offers a Fresh Basket of Food year round at her farm. She brought a sample in to show us. What a great alternative to buying our produce from China or Chile. Kyla Cotton from Urban Harvester talked about her business. Kyla will come in to your property and design your gardens and give you advice on growing. She discussed Heritage Seeds and their significance. Kyla was the driving force behind our Community Gardens in Barrie. She discussed the history of the garden, how is operates and how you can get a plot in the garden to grow your own food.

Finally we heard from Gary Machan from the community health center in Barrie. He was involved in the Index of Well Being which measures how happy and healthy we are as a people. Visit this link to hear more about the Index http://www.ciw.ca/en/Home.aspx

Gary would like to start a local food procurement program for the City of Barrie. He will be the featured speaker for our next meet-up on June 15th. 7pm at City Hall. Everyone is welcome and there is no charge.

Transition Barrie is a grassroots, volunteer, community group of citizens concerned about the impact of Peak Oil, Climate Change and Economic Crisis, on our lives. We look at ways to make our community more resilient to the effects of these changes through workshops, discussions and forums. As events unfold we are endeavoring to be informed and able to take positive action. Our Web site is www.transitionbarrie.org
