Surviving Progress is a stunning new feature documentary that connects the financial collapse, growing inequity, and the Wall Street oligarchy, with future technology, sustainability, and the fate of civilization. Inspired by Ronald Wright’s bestseller A Short History of Progress, filmmakers Mathieu Roy and Harold Crooks dig deep into human nature and patterns of history to challenge and redefine the very idea of progress.

Our First Backyard Bounty class was held on July 18th 2011. It was a follow up from our gardening class. Several people got together to examine what to do with all of the “stuff we had grown in our gardens.” The focus of the classes were to prepare simple, real food that comes from our backyard gardens, our farmers market, local farms or from any other local source.

What delicious meals our teacher Louise Gravelle prepared for us. Everyone enjoyed the food. the classes and the company.

We will be starting some specialty classes very soon. Have you ever wanted to bake an apple pie just like your Grandmother used to do. Well, Louise will be teaching us pie making along with several other great kitchen skills.

The goal is to change consciousness which will enable more of us to begin the work that has been called the great turning or the great work.

Just prior to the enlightenment people obeyed the laws of the priests which served the ruling elites. They began to question as the Bible became available via the printing press and a slow rumbling burst into the Enlightenment and Reformation. We are in a similar state at present building towards a new Enlightenment for the 21st Century, which will be some form of Earth Centered Community. Transition Barrie and The Huronia Unitarians are pleased to be offerring a series of 8 guided discussion groups that we hope will increase the rumbling. This group is underway at present but if you or friends are interested please contact donnahalliday_1@hotmail.com to register for the spring session.

For info or to register please contact Donna Halliday at donnahalliday_1@hotmail.com

Transition Barrie is presenting a series of visioning sessions and design charettes to explore the possibilities for developing the City of Barrie’s annexed lands to the south thru the principles of Permaculture.

Hosted by Steve Dearlove, the intent and goal of these charettes is to come up with a conceptual layout/plan to present to the City as part of their public input in the planning and development process of the annexed lands.

BAU (business as usual) planning does not address any of the notions of Transition or Permaculture. It is our desire to encourage the City to take a new approach and demonstrate leadership in the planning of its new habitation.

***Meeting will be at Minets Point (Yonge St & Minets Point) NOT Downtown

Objectives:

Summarize the concepts we wish to present to the city at our Oct 12th meet-up

Prepare a presentation

Determine who will present

Finalize an agenda for Oct 12th

Location: Steckley Gooderham’s community room, Minets Point

Back to Basics Social Developments, a non-profit organization founded by Andrew Miller, is dedicated to implementing creative solutions for the challenges we face in our increasingly globalized society. The group strives to bring a sense of community to our daily lives by focusing on local solutions to pressing issues. The goal? To provide food, water, shelter and education to everyone, regardless of their situation in life.

New for 2011, Back to Basics is offering an exciting educational summer day camp for Barrie and area children. Staffed with an enthusiastic group of workers and volunteers, our program offers an opportunity to see a non-profit organization in action as we go green, tending our gardens and building stronger and healthier people and communities. Children and youth often bring a unique perspective to and about the world, and we hope to foster their natural enthusiasm by creating an atmosphere that encourages holistic thinking as we engage them in challenging, fun and forward-thinking activities.

Go Green Camp also includes cooking seminars led by Kyle MacDonald, recent grad of Georgian College’s Culinary Apprenticeship Program and has 10 years experience in the hospitality industry. Summer wouldn’t be the same without outdoor games and activities or arts and crafts. Comprehensive programs include trips to the beach, scavenger hunts and adventure walks to organized sports and a picnic games tournament. Inclusive to all ages of children and fitness ability levels. There is Mad Science: How Stuff Works workshops let by a student in the Environmental Technology program. Team building and environmental awareness are key components of all aspects of the program.

We have an incredible summer planned and we hope you’ll join us in learning, laughing and growing.

Camp sessions are $200 per week, running July 4th through September 2nd, discounts are available for enrollment in multiple sessions, as is financial assistance. Please contact Back to Basics for more information about Go Green Camp.

Gord also spoke to the NGO’s in the Barrie area on October 27th at the City Hall Rotunda. There were representatives from over 25 Not for Profit groups. Gord spoke about the responsibilities of his office and what some of the projects his office had dealt with in the past year. He also gave each group a memory stick with the Environmental Bill of Rights and years of reports and information about the Environmental Commissioners actions.
