The province of Ontario tells us that our growing electricity bills are caused by the

move to pricier but cleaner energy such as solar and wind. Is this move to

renewables the real reason for the high cost of electricity or is there another

answer to our electricity woes?

While the rest of the world turns its back on high cost, high risk nuclear, Ontario

energy planners are calling for billions to be spent on new and refurbished

nuclear units. But we don’t have to spend billions on a dangerous nuclear buildup.

Instead, we could invest in job creators like green energy efficiency, clean

energy sources like hydro imports from Quebec, and flexible and super efficient

options like combined heat and power (CHP). All of these options are vastly less

expensive – and less dangerous – than nuclear power.

Our panelists will present their perspectives and we want to hear from you. What

are your concerns and ideas?

Transition Barrie extends a warm welcome to anyone interested in participating in the Transition Barrie Food Secure Network. Our first meeting took place on Tuesday, May 1st at the Barrie Community Health Centre. Our primary areas of focus was to help to organize food related monthly meet ups, education and skill building efforts, multi media work, and a variety of special projects. Some of the areas discussed were Native Beekeeping, Spirituality and Food, Gardening, canning, possible Rogers food shows, the Good Food Box and discussions about the possibility of a new Food Hub and supporting the Mayors vision of a Market to be located at the Bus Terminal. In future meetings we will revisit the Barrie Hunger Report and talk about various cooking classes, and an inexpensive source of protein in our “Just a Pulse Campaign” which focuses on legumes. All are welcome to join this group. There is no charge. For further information, please contact Karen Fox 705-721-6867 or email rightmove@sympatico.ca

What we want to accomplish is to have a store of plates and silverware to use for any of our events so that we do not have to use plastic or disposable dishes. We will also loan out these supplies to any NGO, not for profits or groups wanting to have a Zero Waste event.

Any pattern will do. A couple of dishes or a set will add to collection. If you have any dishes that you are getting rid of and wish to donate, please contact Karen at 705-721-6867 or Rightmove@sympatico.ca

These are pictures from the 2011 Gardening Class 101. We went from a backyard that only had grass to a backyard with 9 raised beds and enough produce to feed several families. Our teacher Kim Keckes from Moondance Organic Gardens, was excellent. I had never gardened before and as you can see from the pictures, we had a lot of success. If you wish to join the class this year, contact us as soon as you can. Cut off is March 15th. We only have room for 15 participants. Perhaps some of you "Last year gardeners" would like to take the advance course at Moondance Organic Gardens. Email Karen at rightmove@sympatico.ca or call 705-721-6867

When: Wednesday, February 22, 2012, 7:00 PM

Where: 200 College Street West room 116, Toronto, ON

It is with great pleasure that Post Carbon Toronto and Transition Toronto host an evening with Tyler Hamilton. Award winning journalist, author, adjunct professor, Corporate Knights magazine editor-in-chief, and contributor to MIT’s Technology Review. And as if this wasn’t enough he writes a must read blog for anyone interested in the latest breaking news in the clean tech sector. http://www.cleanbreak.ca/

The back jacket of his recent book succinctly sums up the situation facing us all.

“Climate change. Runaway resource depletion. Life smothering pollution.”

For the last six years at the Toronto Star Tyler has researched and written about many of the very fine minds that are dedicating their lives and talents to developing solutions to these problems. Somehow he even found time to write a highly engaging book about some of the more interesting and inspirational inventors he met along the way titled ‘Mad like Tesla’.

So if you’re looking for a little break from hearing about the problems, and itching for a night dedicated to some solutions – this is the night for you!

Surviving Progress is a stunning new feature documentary that connects the financial collapse, growing inequity, and the Wall Street oligarchy, with future technology, sustainability, and the fate of civilization. Inspired by Ronald Wright’s bestseller A Short History of Progress, filmmakers Mathieu Roy and Harold Crooks dig deep into human nature and patterns of history to challenge and redefine the very idea of progress.

Our Perma culture group has been busy working on a plan for the development of the annexed lands in Barrie. We have looked at Perma culture principals and LEED ND for guidance and have come up with several recommendations and ideas for a walkable, sustainable community in Barrie’s south end annexed areas. We made a presentation to Mr. Hodgins on Monday the 17th. From all reports it went very well and Eric Hodgins was anxious to hear what our group had to say. His presentation was excellent as well and we fund that we had a lot of common ground. We will continue to work on this project. If you would like to get involved, please contact Mike or Karen at 705-721-7953.

Our First Backyard Bounty class was held on July 18th 2011. It was a follow up from our gardening class. Several people got together to examine what to do with all of the “stuff we had grown in our gardens.” The focus of the classes were to prepare simple, real food that comes from our backyard gardens, our farmers market, local farms or from any other local source.

What delicious meals our teacher Louise Gravelle prepared for us. Everyone enjoyed the food. the classes and the company.

We will be starting some specialty classes very soon. Have you ever wanted to bake an apple pie just like your Grandmother used to do. Well, Louise will be teaching us pie making along with several other great kitchen skills.

If you would like to get involved and join us for future classes, please leave your name with kren Fox

The presentation focused on the health, environmental and economic benefits of local foods. The purpose was to request that the City of Barrie develop a policy that includes using local foods for all city venues and city sponsored events. Thank you to the large group of supporters that attended the presentation. Well will let you know how it turns out.

.
